The 5 Biggest Lessons I’ve Learned as an Interior Stylist
And why interior styling has always been more than just arranging objects...
When I reflect on my journey as an interior stylist, it’s clear that every project, every client, and every challenge has been a teacher in its own right. Styling spaces to tell a story, to evoke emotion, or to transform a blank canvas into something truly memorable has given me invaluable insights into not just the creative process but also life itself.
Here are the five biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way.
1. Storytelling is Everything
Interior styling isn’t just about making a space look pretty; it’s about creating a narrative. Every object, texture, and color has a role to play in the story of a home. Over the years, I’ve learned that the most memorable spaces are those that reflect the people who live there — their journeys, their passions, and their dreams. When you approach styling with storytelling in mind, you create spaces that feel authentic and meaningful.
Insider Tip: Before selecting any piece for a space, ask yourself: What story am I telling here? Does this feel true to the client or the home’s essence?
2. Edit Ruthlessly, but Thoughtfully
In styling, less is often more. It’s easy to get carried away with beautiful objects, but too much can overwhelm a space. The art of editing — knowing what to include and what to leave out — is one of the most valuable skills a stylist can develop. At the same time, it’s important to strike a balance; removing too much can make a space feel cold and impersonal.
Insider Tip: Curate with intention. Every piece should add value to the space, whether it’s functional, emotional, or aesthetic.
3. Embrace Imperfection
Life isn’t perfect, and homes shouldn’t be either. Some of the most captivating interiors I’ve styled have imperfections that tell a story — a slightly worn vintage rug, a handmade ceramic with a tiny flaw, or an antique piece with a patina. These imperfections add character and soul, making a space feel lived-in and loved.
Insider Tip: Don’t strive for perfection; aim for personality. Let a space breathe with the quirks and textures of real life.
4. Stuck? Look To Nature
If I’ve learned one thing about creating timeless and harmonious interiors, it’s to look to nature for inspiration. Nature’s palette is unmatched — earthy tones, soft greens, deep blues, and warm neutrals. The textures, shapes, and layers you find in nature have a way of grounding a space and making it feel calm and connected.
Insider Tip: Incorporate natural materials, textures, and tones wherever you can. Bring the outside in with greenery, light, and organic forms.
5. Confidence Changes Everything
One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn is to trust my instincts. When I first started, I second-guessed myself constantly, worried about whether my ideas would resonate or if my styling choices were “right.” But over time, I’ve discovered that the most impactful designs come from a place of confidence and authenticity. When you believe in your vision, others will too.
Insider Tip: Develop your unique style, trust your process, and don’t be afraid to take creative risks. Confidence is contagious. And the more you lean into it, the more easily it will come.
Styling is a journey of learning, evolving, and growing. Each lesson has shaped how I approach my work and helped me create spaces that feel not only beautiful but also deeply personal.
Whether you’re an aspiring stylist, a seasoned professional, or someone who loves creating a home, I hope these lessons inspire you to see interior styling as more than just arranging objects — but as a way to craft stories, connect with nature, and express who you are.
